TRUTH OR TRASH?

New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning weighs as much as the plastic contained in one infant’s annual supply of disposable diapers.

TRASH

Eli Manning weighs 225 pounds. A year’s worth of one baby’s diapers consumes 286 pounds of plastic—61 pounds more than Manning. This doesn’t include the absorbent inner layer, which over the course of a year adds up between 441 and 882 pounds per child…and all of it ends up in the nation’s landfills.

What’s an eco-conscious parent to do? The debate rages on over cloth vs. disposable diapers. The production of disposables plus the near eternity they spend clogging landfills makes them a real downer for environmentalists. And the water that goes into manufacturing and washing cloth diapers has a serious impact on the planet as well.

The best choice we’ve found out there are gDiapers, which have a washable cotton outer-pant and plastic-free inner diaper refills. The refills can be flushed or even composted, where they’ll break down in about 90 days.
